Lake Naivasha – one of only two fresh-water lakes in the Great Rift Valley (which runs from the Red Sea to Southern Africa, dotted with many fresh and salt water lakes, crates and volcanoes) – was the first hydroport in East Africa and was the centre of the opulent ‘Happy Valley’ settler population during the colonial era in the early 20th century. The lake is home to over 350 species of birds and large families of hippos while its Crescent Island was one of the major sites for the shooting of ‘Out of Africa’ movie. Lake Naivasha is surrounded by stands of papyrus and is a bird-watcher’s paradise. Waterbirds exists in great variety and abundance. Fish eagles and ospreys, herons and egrets, lily-trotters, red-knobbed coots and black crakes can be found within the area of this beautiful lake.
