The Mkata Floodplain is Mikumi's centrepiece — a vast, flat expanse of open grassland and scattered borassus palms that recalls the Serengeti in character and wildlife density. Elephant, buffalo, zebra, wildebeest, giraffe, eland and impala move across the plain in large, visible herds, creating a classic East African safari panorama just four hours from Dar es Salaam.
Mikumi supports healthy populations of lion and leopard. Lion prides patrol the floodplain edges and are frequently seen hunting on the open grassland, while leopard inhabit the riverine woodland and rocky outcrops of the Uluguru foothills. Spotted hyena, jackal and African wild dog — though the latter are uncommon — complete the predator roster.
The park shelters sable antelope and roan antelope — two handsome, powerful species far more commonly associated with southern Africa and rarely seen on the northern Tanzania circuit. They inhabit the miombo woodland and wooded hills south of the floodplain, adding a species dimension that sets Mikumi apart from the more visited parks.
Mikumi's hippo pools are among the most accessible and rewarding in southern Tanzania. Pods of hippo share the permanent water with Nile crocodile, monitor lizard and an impressive concentration of waterbirds — yellow-billed stork, saddle-billed stork, open-billed stork, goliath heron and African fish eagle are all reliably seen.
With over 400 recorded bird species, Mikumi is a superb birding destination. The mix of open floodplain, borassus palm savannah, miombo woodland and riverine forest supports a remarkable diversity — from lilac-breasted rollers and bateleur eagles on the plains to Böhm's bee-eater and Dickinson's kestrel in the woodland. The wet season brings migratory species from Europe and Asia.
Mikumi is the most accessible major national park from Dar es Salaam — just four hours by road along a well-maintained tarmac highway. Mikumi lies just 283 kilometres west of Dar es Salaam along the well-maintained A7 Tanzania–Zambia highway — approximately four hours' drive, making it the most accessible major national park from the coast and the commercial capital.
Scheduled and charter flights from Dar es Salaam reach the Mikumi airstrip in approximately 45 minutes. Flights from Arusha and the northern circuit connect via Dar es Salaam, making it easy to combine Mikumi with a broader Tanzania itinerary.
