Where Volcanoes
Meet Gorillas

Mgahinga Gorilla National Park is a small, spectacular jewel set among the volcanic peaks of the Virunga Massif — Uganda's only sliver of this extraordinary landscape where mountain gorillas, golden monkeys and three extinct volcanoes converge at the meeting point of Uganda, Rwanda and the Democratic Republic of Congo. It is one of the most dramatic and intimate wildlife settings in all of Africa.

Covering just 33.7 square kilometres, Mgahinga is Uganda's smallest national park — yet what it lacks in size it more than compensates for in intensity. The park protects the Ugandan slopes of three Virunga volcanoes: Mount Muhabura (4,127 m), Mount Gahinga (3,474 m) and Mount Sabyinyo (3,669 m), whose mist-cloaked bamboo and Hagenia-Hypericum forests shelter the Nyakagezi gorilla family — one of the most habituated and approachable mountain gorilla groups in the region. Mgahinga is also one of only two places on earth where the endangered golden monkey can be tracked, with a habituated troop living in the bamboo zone on the lower volcanic slopes. Over 115 mammal species and 180 bird species have been recorded, including Albertine Rift endemics such as Rwenzori turaco, Archer's robin-chat and the handsome francolin. The park's Batwa Trail — one of the most acclaimed cultural experiences in East Africa — traces the ancestral heritage of the forest's original inhabitants through caves, gathering sites and sacred spaces on the volcano's flanks.

Why Visit
Mgahinga

Mgahinga's single habituated gorilla family — the Nyakagezi group — delivers one of the most intimate gorilla encounters in the Virunga region. With only eight permits issued per day, the experience feels profoundly private. The group is large, relaxed and charismatic, with multiple silverbacks, playful juveniles and infants. The volcanic bamboo setting — mist curling through the trees, the peaks looming above — makes for an encounter that is as visually dramatic as it is emotionally powerful.

Mgahinga is one of only two places on earth where the endangered golden monkey can be tracked in the wild. A habituated troop of over 80 individuals lives in the bamboo zone on the lower volcanic slopes. These striking, copper-and-black primates are fast, acrobatic and endlessly entertaining to watch as they leap through the bamboo canopy — a completely different primate experience from the slow, contemplative gorilla encounter.

The park's three Virunga volcanoes offer some of the most rewarding high-altitude hikes in East Africa. Mount Sabyinyo — the oldest and most eroded — straddles the triple border of Uganda, Rwanda and the DRC, with a summit ridge where you can stand in three countries simultaneously. Mount Gahinga is a gentler half-day climb to a swamp-filled crater. Mount Muhabura, the tallest at 4,127 metres, rewards a full-day ascent with panoramic views across the entire Virunga chain and the lakes of the western rift.

The Batwa Trail is one of the most acclaimed cultural experiences in East Africa. Led by Batwa elders, the trail follows the ancestral paths of the forest's original inhabitants — through caves used for shelter, gathering sites where medicinal plants were harvested and sacred spaces where rituals were performed. The experience is deeply moving: a living connection to a way of life that endured for millennia before the forest became a national park.

Mgahinga's compact size is its great advantage. The gorilla tracking trailhead, the golden monkey starting point, the volcano hike staging areas and the Batwa Trail all begin within minutes of the park gate. There is no long drive to reach the action — the entire park is the action. Two full days are enough to track gorillas, encounter golden monkeys, hike a volcano and walk the Batwa Trail, making Mgahinga one of the most efficient and rewarding stops on any Uganda itinerary.

The Virunga volcanic landscape that surrounds Mgahinga is unlike anything else in Uganda. Terraced farmland climbs the lower slopes, giving way to dense bamboo forest, then Hagenia-Hypericum woodland and finally the alpine moorland of the summit zones. The visual drama of the three peaks rising above the cultivated valleys — often wreathed in cloud and catching the first light of dawn — creates a setting that is as photogenic as any in East Africa.

Best Time
to Visit

Gorilla and golden monkey tracking in Mgahinga operate year-round regardless of weather. However, the two dry seasons deliver the most comfortable conditions on the volcanic trails and the clearest views of the Virunga peaks.

The primary dry season runs from June through September, with July and August the driest months. Trails through the bamboo zone are firmer, tracking is more comfortable and clear mornings reveal the full drama of the three volcanoes. This is peak season — Mgahinga's handful of daily gorilla permits sell out months in advance.

The shorter dry spell from December through February is equally excellent, with slightly fewer visitors and marginally easier permit availability. The wet months of March to May and October to November bring mist-shrouded, atmospheric conditions that many visitors find deeply evocative — the volcanoes appear and vanish through layers of cloud, and the forest is at its most intensely green and alive.

Getting
There

Mgahinga lies in the extreme south-western corner of Uganda, roughly 510 kilometres from Kampala by road — an 8–9 hour drive through Kabale and the stunning highland lake district around Lake Bunyonyi. Most visitors arrive from Bwindi, which is just 80 kilometres to the north — a scenic 2–3 hour drive through terraced hillsides and eucalyptus valleys.

Domestic flights from Entebbe International Airport to Kisoro airstrip take approximately 1 hour 30 minutes, followed by a 30-minute drive to the park gate. Aerolink and Fly Uganda operate scheduled services during peak season. Kisoro also serves as a gateway for cross-border visits to Volcanoes National Park in Rwanda, just 15 kilometres away.

Mgahinga pairs naturally with Bwindi for a comprehensive gorilla experience — two different forest environments, two different gorilla families, two entirely different landscapes. It also combines beautifully with Lake Bunyonyi for a scenic rest day, or with a cross-border excursion to Rwanda's Volcanoes National Park, creating a Virunga gorilla circuit that spans two countries and three volcanic landscapes.

Why You'll Love It

If you want a gorilla encounter that feels truly personal, Mgahinga delivers it. With only eight permits a day and a single, wonderfully habituated family, the experience is as intimate as gorilla tracking gets — sitting in the bamboo clearing with the Nyakagezi group as mist threads between the volcanic peaks, silverbacks feeding an arm's length away, infants tumbling through the undergrowth. Add golden monkeys, volcano summits and the Batwa Trail, and the intensity of experience per square kilometre is unmatched.

Beyond the Gorillas

Mgahinga packs an extraordinary range of experiences into a tiny park. Track golden monkeys through the bamboo canopy at dawn. Climb Mount Sabyinyo to stand at the triple border of three countries. Walk the Batwa Trail to hear the ancestral stories of the forest's original people. Hike through zones of bamboo, Hagenia woodland and alpine moorland in a single morning. No other park in Uganda offers this density of distinct, high-quality experiences within walking distance of a single gate.

The Experience

Mgahinga is the perfect companion to Bwindi on a comprehensive Uganda gorilla safari. After the ancient lowland rainforest of Bwindi, the volcanic bamboo landscape of Mgahinga feels like a different world — three towering peaks, a completely different forest character and a unique golden monkey encounter that exists nowhere else on the Uganda circuit. Add a rest day on Lake Bunyonyi or cross the border to Rwanda's Volcanoes, and you have the most complete Virunga experience available.
