Flights from the Serengeti directly to Zanzibar are typically operated by regional carriers utilizing light aircraft, which carry a strict combined weight restriction of 15 to 20 kg (33 to 44 lbs) per person covering both checked baggage and carry-ons. Passengers must utilize soft-sided duffel bags without rigid frames or wheels to ensure the luggage can be manually maneuvered into the aircraft’s small under-fuselage cargo pods. Online or airstrip check-in requires a valid photo ID and must be completed at least 1 hour prior to departure. Because this route transitions directly from a dusty safari to a beach destination, travelers with excess luggage can either pay standard per-kilogram excess fees (averaging $2 to $3 USD per kg) or purchase an additional "freight seat" if they require up to 50–75 kg of guaranteed extra space
